MATCH REPORTS

PENRITH PANTHERS v. MERECATS – 04/03/08

The penultimate match of the season for Penrith Panthers was a closely fought affair. The first quarter saw both teams matching each other goal for goal with end to end action until Merecats capitalised on a interception to move ahead winning the quarter 7-5.

Panthers showed real determination from the very start of the second quarter pulling the deficit back quickly.  Throughout the court the team worked hard with precise passing reducing interception opportunities for Merecats and the shooters capitalising on strong feeding into the goal circle. Panthers appeared to have the game under control by the end of the second quarter winning the quarter 11-4 to result in a half time score of 16-11 to Panthers.

The second half of the match saw Panthers making uncharacteristic errors as a result of tight marking by Merecats.  The pressure showed with the attacking unit struggling to get the ball safely to the shooters and the shooting accuracy dropping. Merecats showed consistency throughout the court and worked their way back into the match winning the third quarter 11-4 and leaving the match drawn at 20 all.

The last quarter was tense with both teams anxious to take control and close out the match, but tired legs started to show. The quarter was closely fought with everyone giving as much as they had left in the tank, but Merecats managed to capitalise on the few balls that made it to the goal circle and held out under pressure to win 24-23.

Becky Wallace thoroughly deserved being nominated player of the match for her tiresome and consistent work throughout all four quarters. Panthers would like to thank Salsa Mexican Bistro and Greg Malloy hairdressing for their continued support.

Tues 15th January 08: Penrith Pumas v St Aidans

With the benefit of a full squad to choose from, Penrith travelled to their return fixture against St Aidans, with 10 players.  A welcome return to Penrith’s defence, from injury, allowed Sylvia Daley to play in her first game of the new year.

The game got off to a scrappy start with both sets of centre court players jostling for positions and space.  As the game got going the play improved with Liz Millidge, WA and Karen Peet, C combining well.  Margeret Phillips, the Penrith GS used her body well in the circle to block her opponent, allowing Felicity Fleming, GA to shoot home the ball, on numerous occasions.  She was also on hand to pick up the rebounds and shoot when required.  However it was the clinical finishing by St Aidan’s Goalshooter that was the difference between the 2 teams, and the 1st quarter ended 10-5 to St Aidans.

At the restart a wasted centre by St Aidans allowed Penrith back into the game, however St Aidens soon found their feet and again their finishing was better than Penrith’s.  Penrith trailed at the half time break by 21 goals to 9.

With fresh legs in defence and some good interceptive play by both Lyn Griffiths & Lynzi Greenwood at GK & GD respectively, the St Aidans shooters were forced into making errors, which Penrith capitalised on.  The introduction of Izzy  & Julie Titterington into the wing positions saw the ball moved well around the court.  St Aidans shuffled their defence around at the half time break, to give extra height at GK forcing Julie Robinson, Penrith’s new GS, to shoot from the edge of the circle, however she was more than capable & contributed to the 3rd quarter score being pegged back to 27-14 (6-5 for the ¼).

Penrith were spurred on by their efforts and were determined to get a point from the match by reaching half their opponents score.  The game continued in the same physical vane, which was evident throughout the match, with both teams fighting well for any loose balls or misplaced passes.  When the ball was finally worked into the circles both sets of defenders worked hard limiting the number of successful goal shots to 5-4 in Penrith’s favour.

The final whistle saw the score reach 31-19 to St Aidans, however Penrith were happy to have clawed back a point.  Woman of the Match was deservedly awarded to the Penrith Centre Karen Peet, who worked tiredlessly for the whole 60 mins.

Tues 8th January 08: Penrith Panthers v Brampton 1

The Panthers had an uneasy start to the match, trailing by one goal at quarter time.  In the second quarter Brampton held their lead by two goals, despite some excellent defending from Toinette Thomas, Sue Thompson (man of the match) and Anna Critchley.

After half time the Panthers took control of the game, with some fantastic shots from Francesca Hamilton and Christine Marsh.  At the start of the last quarter the Panthers had a five goal lead, with strong centre court play from Becky Wallace, Carla Wallace and Jayne Minihan.

Brampton fought back strongly with a nail biting end to end last few minutes.  The Panthers couldn't hold their lead with Brampton scoring a goal with only seconds remaining to draw the score even at 29 all.

Many thanks to Salsa Mexican Restaurant and Greg Malloy hairdressing for sponsoring us.

Tues, 27 November 2007: Penrith Pumas v Brampton II

PENRITH Pumas netball team finished the year with a flourish on Tuesday. In a tightly contested match against Brampton II, the Penrith ladies fought hard to win their final game of 2007.

Brampton opened the scoring, but Penrith pulled back, playing a fast and competitive quarter. Centre Izzy Macmillan soon found her feet on her debut for the club and played superbly, with Liz Millidge in support making some excellent interceptions and defending well. With Ange Moffat and Lynne Griffiths doing a superb job of defending the goal third, Brampton were soon trailing 5-2.

Brampton had the ball at the restart and used it well, but Linzi Greenwood and Barbara Key worked hard to maintain Penrith’s strong defence, and the team kept possession and attacked hard, with Julie Titterington at wing attack making some crucial interceptions. The shooters, Felicity Fleming and Julie Robinson, worked together well, picking up loose balls and making some great passes. The half time score was 12-6 to Pumas.

In the third quarter the game was fast and messy, but Penrith once again kept possession and went in to the last quarter 17-10 ahead.

The final period could not have been more exciting as Pumas tired and Brampton found another gear. Everyone worked hard to maintain the lead, but Brampton slowly pulled back with some fantastic shooting. After a nailbiting final 10 minutes Penrith won by just two goals, the final score being 21-19.

Angela Moffat was player of the match for the fourth successive game.

Tues 9th October 07: Penrith Pumas v Sands 2

Penrith Pumas were narrowly defeated in their second league game of the season loosing a close battle to Carlisle based team, Sands 2.

At the end of the first quarter Sands had edged ahead by 6 goals to 4. Karen Peat and Liz Millidge worked well together in centre court feeding quick balls to shooters Felicity Fleming and Julie Robinson.

It was in the second quarter that both shooters really found their form and with key interceptions in defence from Angela Moffet and Sylvia Daley, Pumas maintained a close score still trailing by 2 goals. The score at half time was 13:11.

Changes in the third quarter made an immediate impact in Pumas game. Lindzi Greenwood, Angela Moffet and Anna Robinson battled hard in defence and Pumas attack was fast and firey creating a dynamic pace to the game. At the end of the third quarter there was still only a difference of two goals in the score 21:19.

Although there was pressure on Pumas in the final quarter, they were confident they could take the lead. However, missed shots and careless passes contribute to their downfall as Sands 2 won the game 30:25.

Man of the match went to Angela Moffet for sound defensive play and well played to Julie Titterington making her debut for Penrith Pumas. Many thanks go to Eden Ostrich World who continue to sponsor Penrith Pumas for a second season.

Tues 2nd October 07: Penrith Panthers v Harraby

Penrith Panthers made a good start against Harraby, leading in the early stages with Carla Wallace and Francesca Hamilton working well together in the shooting circle and good understanding between Becky Wallace and Jayne Minihan on centre passes.  Harraby came back towards the end of the quarter with the first quarter finishing 9 goals to 6 with Harraby in the lead. During the second quarter Panthers continued to keep the pressure on Harraby with Ashley Taylor and Sue Thompson in defence picking up some key interceptions in the circle. The score at half time was 19 - 13 with Harraby in the lead.

Panthers let Harraby take the match in the third quarter with changes to give legs a rest effecting the understanding that the team had established during the first half of the match. The third quarter finished 32-15.

Changes for the final quarter made an immediate impact on the game with Panthers winning the last quarter 12-10. Becky Wallace and Toinette Thomas worked well together in centre court with several turn over balls by Anna Critchley in defence being swiftly capitalised on by faultless shooting by player of the match, Sue Cameron. The final score was 42-27 to Harraby, but a fantastic result for Panthers against the strongest team in the league.

Thanks again to Kerrie Wallace, who was reserve defense and Salsa Mexican Restaurant and Greg Malloy hairdressing for sponsoring us.
